The Munster Mustangs baseball team is gearing up for an exciting season under the leadership of head coach Mike Mikolajczyk, who enters his fourth year at the helm with a career record of 52-31. The Mustangs finished last season with a solid 16-12 overall record and a 6-6 mark in the Northwest Crossroads Conference (NCC). Their season was highlighted by a Region Classic Championship victory over state champion Lake Central, showcasing the team’s potential. Munster returns several key players who were instrumental in last season’s success. Zach Wright, a PNW commit, hit .360 last season with a .413 OBP, 15 RBIs, and 22 runs scored while providing steady leadership at shortstop. Mason Jarrett, a Triton Junior College commit, hit .410 with a .474 OBP, driving in 28 runs and stealing 14 bases from center field. SIUE commit Bishop Cappetto brings strength on the mound with 36 strikeouts in 25 .2 innings, while Tyler Fuller, Owen Roberts, and Ed Kicho add valuable depth to the pitching staff. Coach Mikolajczyk is optimistic about the mix of experience and emerging talent on this year’s team. “I'm very excited about the upcoming season. I feel like we have quality pitching combined with guys who can hit. We will have a nice mix of younger and experienced varsity players,” he said. Senior Zach Wright added, “I'm looking forward to playing with my teammates for my last season and competing for a sectional championship.” The Mustangs have a challenging schedule ahead, including matchups against Andrean, Lake Central, Valpo, and Chesterton. Special events like the Cancer Game on May 2nd against Lake Central, Little League/Bombers Night on May 8th against Merrillville, and Senior Day on May 24th against Bremen will provide great opportunities for community support. With strong leadership, talented returners, and a competitive schedule, the Mustangs are ready to make a deep postseason run and build on last season’s momentum.
