In a thrilling IHSAA Sectional opener, the Munster Mustangs punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 49-47 victory over Hammond Central, capped off by a buzzer-beating shot from Josh Malloy. The Mustangs will face Lake Central on Friday at 7 PM for a chance to advance. The game was a battle from the start, with both teams exchanging leads 11 times and tying the score on nine occasions. Munster trailed 30-21 in the second quarter but responded with a 12-2 run to reclaim momentum. The game remained tight throughout, with neither team able to pull away in the final minutes. Trailing 46-47, Munster had possession on the final play. Malloy, who finished with 12 points, delivered in the clutch, sinking a game-winning shot as time expired, sending the Mustangs and their fans into celebration. Tyler Fuller led Munster with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Troy Jarret added 13 points in a balanced offensive effort. Hammond Central’s #2 Marcus Browder had an impressive game, leading all scorers with 24 points. The Mustangs now turn their focus to Lake Central on Friday at 7 PM at Lake Central High School.
